Betting preview: Chelsea to return to winning ways v Schalke

Jose Mourinho is set to make wholesale changes for tonight’s Champions League group game (7.45pm) but that won’t stop them picking up three points.

£92 million worth of talent is set to be left out of the Chelsea team at Stamford Bridge this evening after the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday, whilst £50 million striker Fernando Torres is out through injury. So it’s a tough game to call against German outfit Schalke right? Not really.

The Blues are still heavy favourites after a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture two weeks ago and due to the strength in depth they have in the squad. But would I be taking the 9/20 on offer for a home win with Bet Victor? No.

The stats suggest that both teams will find the net tonight. Chelsea have failed to keep three successive Champions League clean sheets since late 2010 and Schalke have scored in the 11 European games that had preceded the defeat to Mourinho’s side in Gelsenkirchen.

Chelsea also have a great record against German opposition at home, winning five out of six and drawing the other and keeping five clean sheets in the process.

Given that Mourinho will be looking to make changes, I think it will be a tight game but Chelsea will come out on top 2-1. The best price on that score is 17/2 with Bet Victor. I’d also recommend taking the 11/5 on offer with William Hill for both teams to score with Chelsea picking up the win.

Chelsea fans, will it be more comfortable than I’m suggesting? Let us know your thoughts.
