The in-form striker looks certain to miss the group game against German side Schalke after sustaining a muscle injury and missing training on Tuesday.
Things just aren’t going right for Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho at the moment and the news that Fernando Torres missed morning training today, with a leg injury, will surely put paid to his chances of featuring in tomorrow night’s game against Schalke.
Indeed the fact that he is now considered doubtful for Wednesday's return at Stamford Bridge will not only disappoint the manager and the fans but Torres himself, who was beginning to show the form of old.
Torres was sent home early to rest following treatment at the club’s training ground in Cobham and although no final decision has been made, one is expected today after more tests.
The Spaniard was last seen playing for Chelsea at the weekend where he lasted just over an hour of their Premier league match at Newcastle, before being substituted in the 2-0 defeat.
Should the striker fail to recover from the muscle injury then Mourinho may be forced to turn to a pair of strikers with just one goal to their names this season, veteran Samuel Eto’o has scored just once since joining the club in August whilst the Blues only other fit and available striker, Demba Ba, has made only five appearances this season all of which have been fruitless.
Chelsea and Schalke are currently first and second respectively in Group E with six points each and a result for either side will all but see them progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
