Spanish newspaper Marca surprised everybody a few weeks ago when they claimed Chelsea had tied up a deal for Porto's Nicolas Otamendi.
"Otamendi goes Blue: Porto's Argentine defender, Nicolás Otamendi, is set to wear Chelsea colours next season. On the radar of several European clubs for a while now, he has been snagged by the Premier League."
There was however no club announcement from Chelsea, no comment from the player, and the link appeared to fizzle out.
There were suggestions that Chelsea had agreed a move for the centre-back behind the scenes, and just were not able to announce it, but this appears to have been ruled out.
Porto president Pinto da Costa spoke to the media about the future of three stars this afternoon, including Eliaquim Mangala and Jackson Martinez, both who have at one time or another been linked to Chelsea.
He outlined: "I know that through the newspapers every day some team is interested in Mangala, but Porto has not received any proposal, as well as Jackson and Otamendi."
That's categorical, that the previously reported Chelsea deal for Otamendi is not done, and an offer is not on the table.
The centre-back has just been recalled to the Argentina national squad for the first time in two years, and even this week linked with Manchester City.
Certainly if Chelsea do want him, it's back to square one, and after his international recall he may just cost more now than he would have done before.
Is Otamendi a player Chelsea should be targeting?
