The 25-year-old Mexican striker has seen a diminished status at the English champions since the arrival of Robin van Persie last summer and has opened the door to speculation by his retweeting of a Sky Sports post regarding comments his Mexico teammate Carlos Vela made about the striker’s future.
David Moyes has insisted Chicharito is part of his plans this season but with the World Cup next summer just around the corner, perhaps United would consider swapping the unsettled forward for one of these…
1) Robert Lewandowski
The 25-year-old Polish striker was at the centre of a transfer saga this summer – his contract expires this summer and the Borussia Dortmund frontman is desperate to move to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.
Dortmund are understandably reluctant to let him depart on a free transfer to their most bitter rivals and could sell him for a reduced price in January to avoid losing him for nothing in June. United would be an attractive proposition for Lewandowski and Hernandez could effectively replace him almost like-for-like over in Germany. It would be a win-win situation for everyone involved.
2) Juan Mata
Another unsettled star at present is Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata who has himself seen a reduced status since the return of Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard has been criticised publicly by the Blues boss and is heavily linked with a January exit. United are crying out for a quality attacking midfield playmaker and Mata would be the ideal for the Red Devils who failed in their pursuit of his compatriot Cesc Fabregas this summer.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s strikers have been underwhelming this season so far and the Blues may be looking to bring in some reinforcement up front – it could be swap that suits all involved.
3) Angel Di Maria
United were linked with the 25-year-old Argentine over the summer and the arrival of world record signing Gareth Bale and Spanish starlet Isco at the Bernabeu has seen Di Maria slide down the pecking order at Real Madrid.
Di Maria would be an improvement on the likes of Nani and Ashley Young and with Los Blancos over-reliant on the unsettled Karim Benzema who is also linked with a departure from the Spanish capital, Chicharito could be just the kind of signing they need in return for a player they don’t really need who would be the kind of quality United could really use.
4) Ezequiel Garay
United’s midfield has not been the only area of the team criticised this term – the defence has been at best inconsistent and at worst woeful. 34-year-old veteran Rio Ferdinand has lost a yard of pace, captain Nemanja Vidic has been underwhelming and whilst Jonny Evans has improved and Phil Jones looks like a future captain, Moyes will likely need to bring someone in.
The champions were linked with this 27-year-old Benfica centre-back this summer but the move never came off. Perhaps United could reignite the flames of their interest in the Argentine who combines experience, top quality, technical supremacy and physical prowess for the Portuguese side.
5) Leighton Baines
Presently, Hernandez is valued around £20m – United failed with several bids this summer to bring in this 28-year-old England left back from Everton. According to reports they failed with bids of £8m and £12m and Everton will likely hold firm on their stance that their star man is not for sale in January but maybe, just maybe, they would be tempted to change their mind if a player of Hernandez’ talent was their consolation.
