Manchester United are apparently on hot pursuit of a midfielder who is like a more advanced clone of a Gunners great.
From Cristiano Ronaldo, to Nani, to Bebe, Old Trafford has become a modern home for a number of Portuguese players of differing talents with one thing in common… a specific focus on honing their talents within the exciting positions of the pitch; attack.
And now, as European clubs approach the mid-season market, Manchester United may well enter negotiations for another exciting, young player from Portugal who has been likened to a 'technically more evolved' midfielder than former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.
A £3m-rated 21-year-old of Angolan descent and a physically-imposing frame, William Carvalho is very much a Sporting CP product. Developed by the club's academy, the player has represented Portugal at all levels from Under 17 to U21, yet has most recently played at the professional level on loan, primarily to Fatima and latterly to Cercle Brugge.
A defensive-midfielder by trade, Carvalho brings excitement in the form of tenacity, stamina, work-rate and strength. His former manager, Ricardo Moura, is beaming at the burgeoning ability of his former prodigy and made the comparison to Vieira; a three-time Premier League winner and four-time FA Cup winner with Arsenal.
According to Portuguese source A Bola, United were - along with Freiburg and Juventus - scouting Carvalho directly at a recent Sporting match. The player, who has featured in 797 minutes of action for his club thus far this season, is currently valued at a mere £3m by transfermarkt.co.uk.
