Arsenal weekend round-up: Szczesny contract and Ramsey says 'be streetwise' on Wednesday

All the news and gossip from this weekend at The Emirates.

Arsenal have stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League table with a confident and impressive performance against their rivals Liverpool.

Liverpool were on top early on, but the mood suddenly changed after a quick Arsenal breakaway. Bacary Sagna marauded down the right flank before delivering the ball to the far-post, where Santi Cazorla was arriving. His initial effort, a powerful header, cannoned off the post and came back into his celebration path - when he then smashed in a half volley for 1-0.

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has signed a new deal at the club. He struggled last season but has come back from the summer in great form and been rewarded with an extension until 2018, and has apparently doubled his wages to a whopping £100k-a-week.

Aaron Ramsey then produced a party-piece to wrap things up. He took control of a half volley on the edge of the box, and smashed home a powerful half volley beyond the helpless dive of Simon Mignolet.

Arsenal's 5 biggest Premier League victories

There was unfortunately some bad news after the game, as Arsenal’s injury concerns deepened at The Emirates.

Jack Wilshere picked up a knock to his dodgy ankle in training on Friday, which ruled him out of the game at The Emirates yesterday - meanwhile Kieran Gibbs limped out of proceedings.

Wenger had this to say about their fitness:

“Honestly, it’s too early to say. Gibbs looks muscular – that’s not good news. It is a calf problem; I don’t know how bad it is. Jack had a little ankle inflammation and maybe he will be better. We have to wait until Monday. It is not long-term.”

Ilkay Gundogan continues to have his name linked with a move to North London. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder, 23, has been linked with several moves to the Premier League recently - and now a £25 million bid is being mooted in the Daily Star.

Arsenal face Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday, and Aaron Ramsey has been speaking about the occasion.

The Welshman, who is in fine form for the club, had this to say on the upcoming tie:

“In the game at Emirates, we were a bit naïve - it should have at least finished as a draw. We switched off and they caught us on a counter-attack in the last 10 minutes and we paid the price, which will happen at this level. We will learn from that. We are confident. There were periods in the game when we felt very dominant and maybe could have scored a few but we will be a bit more streetwise going over there.’’
