Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has revealed Jose Mourinho attempted to sign Barcelona midfielder Alexis Sanchez.
Sanchez was one of the hottest talents in football back in his days with Udinese in Serie A so it was no surprise that several top sides looked at him when there were rumblings that he would be leaving the Italian club.
Mourinho was then the Real Madrid manager and they were one of the clubs taking a look at the winger, with Mourinho seemingly keen to try and sign the Chilean on a long term deal.
Needless to say the attraction of moving to Barcelona in the summer of 2011 was too good for the player to turn down and he completed a €26 million transfer to sign for arguably the greatest side there has ever been.
There have been rumours in the recent past that Sanchez could be vulnerable to offers from sides looking to take him away from the Nou Camp, with Manchester United publicly linked with the 24-year-old.
However, he seems to have turned his form around, nailing down a starting role under Gerardo Martino at the Spanish champions, regularly playing on the right side of midfield.
He’s created a solid wing partnership with Brazilian superstar Neymar, who regularly plays on the left but considering the calibre and profile of the midfielders at Barcelona’s disposal, he may find himself out of the team again if he can’t maintain his form.
The long and short of it is that Sanchez is a player that Mourinho likes, otherwise he wouldn’t have tried to sign him.
That means Chelsea have as good a chance as any other team of getting their hands on him should he be looking to move away from the Nou Camp in the future for whatever the reason.
Chelsea currently don’t have many out and out wingers, with Mourinho often having to use several of his high profile central players in slightly wider roles.
Sanchez could be a very good future signing and he’s certainly good enough to play down one of the flanks consistently for Chelsea. However, an awful lot has to happen before that’s possible.
