Borussia Dortmund is not a bad place to start for any team looking to snap up top players, drastically improving their squad with some big money investments.
Several Dortmund stars have been linked with moves away from the club, with Premier League sides mentioned as possible destinations.
Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels, Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan are just a few of the current Dortmund generation who have been linked with English teams over recent weeks and months.
However, newspapers Sport and Mundo Deportivo have suggested Barcelona are about to go after Dortmund’s main players, with Gerardo Martino apparently intent on improving his Barcelona squad in the winter.
Sport strongly suggests that Lewandowski is the main focus for the side, which will come as a big blow to the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, who will both be on the hunt for centre forward additions in January.
“It seems that Guardiola is fully satisfied with the players he has on staff - it opens a new horizon of negotiation and that is where the FC Barcelona could have options acquiring his services - The truth is that Tata Martino seen as a priority to hire a top center forward, strong and scorer,” reads a translated version of the report in Sport.
Lewandowski was always going to be a very highly sought after player and Barcelona appear to be encouraged by recent reports that Lewandowski hadn’t actually agreed to sign Bayern Munich when his Dortmund deal expires next summer.
Mundo Deportivo backs up the report in Sport, suggesting that the two main targets for Barcelona this winter are the Polish striker and dynamic playmaker Marco Reus, someone who has been linked with all of the big clubs in the Premier League.
“The Bundesliga is a clear scope and Borussia Dortmund, a clear objective. Barca looking to have controlled, if necessary, two cracks such as Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus,” reads the report in Mundo.
However, the second paper suggests Barca won’t stop there and goes onto mention central defender Hummels and midfielder Gundogan as potential targets.
Hummels is an unsurprising name in the report because Barcelona have been very active in looking for another central defender to come into the mix, having failed to lure David Luiz away from Chelsea and Daniel Agger away from Liverpool.
Gundogan seems to be a little bit of a red herring because it’s not clear in Mundo’s report why his name has been mentioned and why exactly Barcelona want him.
However, the focus on securing a number nine striker, which would release Lionel Messi to go and play in a deeper position is clear and that’s bad news for any team monitoring the situation of Lewandowski.
