A round up of the latest news stories and gossip about Aston Villa.
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has reminded Aston Villa fans that he’s still in the early days of rebuilding the club. Lambert is just over a year into his role as Villa boss.
“We’re only a year and a bit into building this team but our fundamental principles are already clear. We try to win games. We play with hunger and desire and we play with pride,” he told the Birmingham Mail.
Lambert is also sweating over the fitness of forward Gabby Agbonlahor ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash against West Ham. Agbonlahor picked up an ankle problem in last weekend’s defeat to Everton.
Midfielder Fabian Delph says the standards and expectations of Lambert have helped him to become a better player. Delph has been one of the club’s most consistent midfielders this season.
“When Paul Lambert came I thought I would have been training twice a week, but he was like 'no chance - you're training every day,” Delph told the club’s official website.
Aston Villa midfielder Marc Albrighton has joined Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan. Albrighton has been unable to force his way into the first team picture under Paul Lambert and will spend the next month with the recently relegated team.
In other transfer news, there are still lingering reports that top Premier League sides will move for Christian Benteke this winter. The forward has been consistently linked with a move away from Villa Park despite extending his contract with the club.
Benteke has been backed by Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who says his penalty miss against Everton last weekend won’t phase the forward.
“His confidence will not waver. Christian will bounce back, no doubt. He's a top guy and a top professional. We have all the confidence in the world in Christian,” said the Ameircan.
Former Aston Villa youngster Richard Bryan has been handed a trial at Leeds United. The centre back came through the youth system at Villa Park before he was released and he’s been given the chance to revitalise his career at Elland Road.
