Arsenal have been dealt an early blow ahead of the opening of the January transfer window. One of the clubs major targets, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender, has put pen to paper on a new improved deal at the BayArena.
The German international has reportedly been a long-term target of Arsene Wenger’s for a number of years now - and there were plenty of rumours that the club could go back in for him this January, as a long-term solution to the holding midfield role.
In the summer Arsenal made an £18.5 million bid for the player that was duly rejected by the Bundesliga’s third club - and a bid of £20 million was expected in the January window.
But, as confirmed on the clubs official website, he has now signed a massively extended deal that will keep him at the club until 2019.
Luis Suarez was never going to make a move to Arsenal this summer, says Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.
Suarez was widely expected to leave the club in the summer, after becoming disillusioned at the clubs lack of Champions League football.
The saga saw Arsenal bid £40,000,001 for the player, hoping it would trigger a release clause.
"It was something that was never going to happen. I respect why Arsenal wanted to buy a player of Luis' quality because he's one of the leading strikers in the world. But for us, and the institution that we are, we certainly weren't going to sell to a rival or a competitor. That's something we felt very strongly about from the off.’’
Suarez will visit The Emirates this weekend, when Liverpool travel to take on Arsenal.
Arsenal are said to be leading the way in the pursuit of FC Basel defender Fabian Schar. The highly talented 21-year-old has been linked with plenty of big clubs across Europe recently, including Italian champions Juventus.
talkSPORT reveal that Arsenal could make a bid for the player in January.
Loaned out defender Ignasi Miquel has been hailing his current club Leicester City. The 21-year-old is currently on a season long loan at the King Power Stadium, and scored his first goal for the club in the League Cup triumph against Fulham in the week:
"Life at Leicester is brilliant. I've got an apartment here and the lads have been great to me. I could not ask for anything else.’’
