Arsene Wenger revealed ahead of Arsenal's game with Chelsea just how close Nicklas Bendtner was to leaving the club this summer.
"Nicklas has been away for a lot of time and he was half – when I say half I mean 80 per cent - out of the club, and in the end he decided to stay and I stopped him from going."
"Nicklas will get even more credit if has a great fight tomorrow and does well."
Famous last words. Fans watching last night's display in which he led the line against Chelsea in their League Cup defeat, may well wish that he had not have bothered and let the Dane leave.
Bendtner was substituted off after 67 minutes after having just one shot on goal, which itself was off target.
He had just 28 touches in his time on the pitch, a poor ratio by anybody's standards, with his teammates struggling to get him into the game.
When it comes to his future, one famous Arsenal fan has had enough.
Bendtner should be sold on January 1 for that performance. And that headband. #Afc— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) October 29, 2013
If necessary, I will personally pay another club to take Bendtner in January. #Afc— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) October 29, 2013
Arsene Wenger will surely not take much notice of such an outcry, but will be re-thinking his own decision to keep the Dane himself.
Unless Olivier Giroud gets injured between now and January, with Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski set to return, and no League Cup now to prove his worth, it is possible Bendtner has made his last start for the Gunners.
We may be wrong and he could get opportunities, but certainly last night he did himself no favours.
Was it Bendtner's fault or did he simply get no service? Should he get another chance?
