Tottenham Hotspur made hard work of their Capital One Cup fourth round tie against Hull City, but they managed to squeeze through after an 8-7 penalty-shootout victory after the match had finished 2-2 after 120 minutes.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas said earlier this week that the club's record signing Erik Lamela was so far struggling to settle into English football. Seen as the man to replace Gareth Bale, fans haven't seen the best of the £30 million man yet, and instead it is Andros Townsend who has been taking the plaudits.
AVB said "He knows he isn't producing half of what he can produce, but he understands the situation now is that he has to compete for his place". Lamela himself also knows that he needs to adapt quickly so he doesn't fall out of favour with Argentina before the World Cup next summer.
Erik Lamela was given a rare start on Wednesday night for the cup match against Hull City and impressed for the majority of the game, providing a threat for the Tigers defence.
Spurs fans had been eager to see their club record signing in action after so much had been said about his potential. As the match headed into a penalty-shoot-out Lamela took the fourth spot kick for Spurs but it was saved by Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupović.
Despite this fans were quick to take to Twitter and praise his overall performance.
Can we ignore Lamela's miss and look to the positives? Was probably his best display so far (not saying a great deal) but promising— Jay Jaffa (@jayjaffa) October 30, 2013
Lamela for me was decent tonight apart from the penalty miss.— Josh Miles (@Joshua_Miles) October 30, 2013
Lamela continues his fine start to life in England. Young, talented, deserves time to settle but at £30m, the jury really is out.— Tommy Burton (@TommyBurtonAFC) October 30, 2013
We’re through, Lamela put in a promising display and Kaboul lasted 120mins. #positives— Jake (@JakeTHFC) October 30, 2013
Other fans were hoping that his penalty miss doesn't have a negative effect, as it could lead to Spurs fans getting on his back. Hopefully people will see past that, as a penalty-shoot-out is often a lottery and you can never ridicule someone with regards to a penalty miss unless it is an unnecessary cheeky chip a la Yann Kermogant in the Championship Play-off semi final.
Hopefully that penalty miss doesn't set Lamela back, that could be a blow for him.— talk of the lane (@talkofthelane) October 30, 2013
Really pity Lamela.Gets the chance to endear himself to the fans but he fluffed it. But hope's not lost, you still can be a star at the Lane.— ∆ntoine Griezmann (@antoine_iskndr) October 30, 2013
Lamela looked far more confident towards the end of the game..... shame the penalty has probably erased all that— Dan Newman (@dannewman86) October 30, 2013
I feel for Lamela. I thought he was really neat today and played some really good passes. He looked semi confident too as game went on. :(— SΔV Fernαndes (@SavilleF) October 30, 2013
Lamela will be happy to get some much needed minutes under his belt, and most Spurs fans will be patient with the ex-Roma player. Gareth Bale took a long time before he started to deliver quality performances. Some people seem to have already made their mind up though about Lamela regardless.
Erik Lamela's move to Tottenham is looking as impressive as Ali Dia's move to Southampton.— Sam (@_SamAFC) October 30, 2013
Lamela is the new Rebrov— Joe McPhee (@Joe_McPhee9) October 30, 2013
