Arsenal out the cup, but Podolski return and 2013 form give cause for optimism

All the latest morning news from The Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are out of the Capital One Cup after a defeat at home to Premier League rivals Chelsea. Both teams rested players for the game, but it was certainly the second string of Chelsea that dominated the game - and they thoroughly deserved their 2-0 triumph. Cesar Azpilicueta got things going with his first goal ever for the club, capitalsing on a mistake by Carl Jenkinson. Juan Mata then finished the game off with a stunning strike.

Arsene Wenger says that the game against Liverpool this weekend is the perfect opportunity for Arsenal to fix their mistakes immediately - and continue their good Premier League form:

‘’If you take the points we have made since 1 January, it's more than anyone else. On a longer distance, you'll see more of the quality of the team than in the last two games. It's difficult to swallow what happened to us in the last week, but the mistakes we have made are so big that they can be corrected. We have to keep the basis of our game and go into the next one.’’

Lukas Podolski returned to training with the club yesterday. The German international, who has been linked with several moves away from The Emirates this week, has been out injured since hurting a hamstring v Fenerbahce in August posted a picture of himself online in full gear out on the pitch at London Colney.

Finally and Arsenal have put to bed the Emmanuel Frimpong saga. He was in hit water after posting a remark on Twitter suggesting that he would be in the Arsenal team if he was ‘white and English’.

However what was clearly supposed to be a joke has been unfortunately misconstrued in the media and the Ghanaian international has found himself in hot water.

However the club are not set to fine the player, and will just speak to him over his social media conduct.
