Arsenal may have selected a handful of second choice players like Nicklas Bendtner and Lukasz Fabianski against Chelsea, but Arsene Wenger added a sprinkling of stardust into his team selection.
In fact a midfield of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey would be one you would back to beat most teams, but they came unstuck against Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side.
Jack Wilshere has in recent weeks, through off-field reasons, been at the centre of many a headline, with his place in Arsenal's starting line-up also less than assured despite scoring in two consecutive Premier League games for the first time.
With competition for places intense with Ramsey, Rosicky, Flamini, Cazorla, Arteta, and Ozil all fighting their corner, Arsene Wenger is having to rotate, although with Flamini out injured his decision is made slightly easier - despite the negative effect his absence has on the team.
Against Dortmund last week Wilshere completed just 65 per cent of his passes - albeit playing out of position out wide - before limping off with an ankle injury, and came off the bench for the win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Wilshere last night was back in the centre and substantially improved the accuracy of his passing from the Dortmund game, completing 89 per cent of his efforts.
He had one shot on goal which was off target, and created one goalscoring opportunity. He also completed more successful dribbles (3) than any other Arsenal player as he sought to try and drive forward and influence the game. Defensively he made two tackles, made two interceptions and made two clearances, clearly putting the work in for the Gunners.
With a crucial game upcoming in the Premier League at the weekend against Liverpool, we decided to take a look at how Arsenal fans reacted to his performance to see if there is confidence Wilshere should get the nod to start.
This game is showing how much better Wilshere is in the central midfield role. Need to stop playing him wide! #AFC— - THE DEMI GOD (@Dat_Cray_Boy) October 29, 2013
I hope Wilshere is benched and Rosicky starts against Liverpool. We need to move the ball faster. #AFC, Rosicky is top class.— Franck Govia (@govia_franck) October 29, 2013
Jack Wilshere looks like he's getting his form back from what we saw tonight. He had a decent game. #AFC— Dani....(Gunners) (@DaniGunnerss) October 29, 2013
Arsenal fans saying Wilshere played well tonight. Take off your Rose tinted glasses #afc— Aiden Hodgson (@littleaiden81) October 29, 2013
Arsenal certainly need a little confidence boost right now. Been lacking panache since Norwich. Wilshere back on song big positive.— Makoto (@makotz_official) October 29, 2013
Wilshere was the best arsenal player today. I think he would have done more than Bendtner if he was playing as a striker— Nature Boy (@PedCarter) October 29, 2013
Wilshere needs to raise his game, he is now very far behind Ramsey, from England and arsenal's future to almost another squad player— rosicky°_jnr (@DenilsonRosicky) October 29, 2013
Tonight also shows again that Ramsey - Wilshere pivot won't work. Not against the best anyways #Arsenal— Mesut Ramsey (@Marss_Montana) October 29, 2013
Arsenal were never going to win this game. Should have rested the likes of Ramsey Wilshere and Rosicky for the weekend and taken the loss— O.G (@iceman1207) October 29, 2013
Its a must Arsene start Rosicky over Wilshere against Liverpool.— Samuel Scott (@orijakola) October 29, 2013
Arteta in for Wilshere against Liverpool will help massively, some of Jacks passing tonight was just poor.— Bruin (@BruinTheLegend) October 29, 2013
Having played the full 90, can't see Wilshere playing from the start vs Liverpool.— DaG (@Wrighty_8) October 29, 2013
What do you think? Was Wilshere good or disappointing last night? Should he start vs Liverpool?
