Wigan loan spells end of Albrighton’s Aston Villa career

Paul Lambert appears to have deemed the promising winger as surplus to requirements.

Marc Albrighton may have already played his last game for Aston Villa, a club he has been tied to for some 15 years, after it was revealed that the winger is set to move to Championship side Wigan on loan.

The 23-year-old first broke into the Villans first-team two seasons ago, under then-caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald, who was keen to utilise the club’s promising crop of youngsters which also included midfielder Barry Bannan.

However since then a combination of injuries alongside a change in management and overall club strategy appears to have reduced Albrighton’s first-team opportunities.

Throat surgery, a broken foot and even a thigh strain have hardly helped matters, while manager Paul Lambert has taken an altogether different approach, opting to signing relatively-unknown foreign stars with a view to selling them on for maximum profit.

Villa’s crop of young talent, meanwhile, has endured mixed fortunes, with Bannan already allowed to leave for Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace, having been bandied around in loan spells with Derby, Blackpool and Leeds.

Albrighton is evidently also surplus to requirements, having endured the same cold shoulder treatment administered to outgoing striker Darren Bent by the ruthless Lambert.

With the former England under-20 star also in the final year of his contract with Aston Villa, it would also appear that his days at the club are numbered.

Now the 23-year-old must focus on impressing with Wigan, where manager Owen Coyle is expected to deliver an immediate return to the top-flight.

Promotion success with the Latics could see Albrighton rewarded with a permanent contact at the DW Stadium, or perhaps even some offers of employment from any number of clubs in the Premier League.

For the time being though, the midfielder may well be looking back on his decade-and-a-half at Villa with some regret.
