News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Manchester United take on Norwich City in the Capital One Cup Fourth Round this evening at Old Trafford.
The team news is as follows: Starting team: Lindegaard, Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Büttner, Zaha, Cleverley, Jones, Young, Januzaj, Hernandez.
Subs: Amos, Anderson, Rooney, Giggs, Smalling, Fabio, Valencia.
Vice-captain Patrice Evra insists the Capital One Cup is a ‘big trophy’ despite the smaller prestige and status it tends to receive in comparison to other domestic and continental competitions.
"It doesn't matter if it's the Community Shield, the League Cup or something else," Evra said.
"It's one we always want to win. It doesn't matter who plays, whether it's the senior players or the younger players, Manchester United always wants to win.”
Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson believes United can still ‘recover’ to retain the title despite a slow and disappointing start to the season under new boss David Moyes who took over from Ferguson in June after 26 years at old Trafford.
"We had bad starts to the season many times," 71-year-old Ferguson said.
"We are the only club in that league that can come from behind to win the league because of our history."
David Moyes has defended United winger Nani against fans who booed the Portuguese international during the Red Devils’ win against Stoke last weekend.
"He is a regular and captain for Portugal so he is very talented,” he explained.
"There were one or two decisions he might have made better, but he got us the (first) goal with a lovely ball. We have a lot of competition for places in the wide areas, incredible competition, and that is what we're looking for."
Moyes also insisted that Wilfried Zaha is in his plans for this season, despite the youngster having hardly featured at all this term and the Scot suggesting he may be sent out on loan in January this week.
In transfer news, The Express claims United are ‘readying’ a £25 million bid for Miralem Pjanic. The 23-year-old Roma playmaker could be a target for David Moyes in January, according to reports.
Meanwhile, the same source claims Chelsea are preparing a £35 million ‘raid’ for Wayne Rooney in the winter transfer window after failing in their pursuit of the England number 10 this summer.
In other news, Robin van Persie has been nominated for the FIFA Ballon d’Or. The Dutch striker made the 23-man shortlist for the most prestigious and coveted individual award in the world alongside the likes of four-time winner Lionel Messi and former United star Cristiano Ronaldo and the world most expensive player Gareth Bale.
Finally, former United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has won French racing series the FFSA GT Championship in Marseille.
