There have been a couple of reports in the past 24 hours that Daniel Agger could consider his future at Anfield
There was the emergence of a story in the media overnight that Daniel Agger was considering his future at Liverpool if he couldn't force his way back into the starting line-up according to Danish television.
This story is hardly a surprise though given the vast array of defensive talent Liverpool now have at the club.
Having gone into the transfer market to sign both Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho on deadline to accompany Kolo Toure who joined on a free transfer along with current centre-halves Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Sebastian Coates there was always going to be a fierce competition for places.
That’s not even mentioning Andre Wisdom – who has now gone out on loan to Derby County – or Martin Kelly who can also play in a central defensive role.
There was always going to be one, maybe two defenders that are regarded as top class that were going to have to warm the bench for Liverpool a little more often than they’d perhaps like at Liverpool this season.
A lot of it is down to the manager. As we have seen so far during his reign at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers likes to have a settled side when it’s producing the goods, and likes to give the opportunity to players to hold down their place in the side when they get the chance – unfortunately for Agger he got injured.
The other is Liverpool’s lack of European football this season. Having already been knocked out of the League Cup this season combined with no European football means that there isn’t really a need for the Liverpool boss to rotate or freshen up his side.
There may come a time when Rodgers will change his back line again – like he did halfway through last season when he brought Jamie Carragher back into the side in place of Martin Skrtel.
Liverpool fans shouldn’t be surprised with the events of the past 24 hours, it just comes with the territory of having so many options.
