Bale departed Tottenham Hotspur for £85m this summer but Aldridge suggested the Welshman isn’t at the standard of the Uruguayan. Suarez was subject to a bid of £40m plus a pound from Arsenal as he tried to engineer a move away from Anfield during the summer in the search of Champions League football.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge said: ‘It’s no wonder the owners scoffed at that valuation because Suarez is worth more than double that. Gareth Bale, who went from Tottenham to Real Madrid for £85m is a quality player but he’s no Suarez.
‘The fact is that if the Uruguayan hadn’t picked up that long ban last season he would have been player of the Year and he would have won the Golden Boot.’
Many football fans will be in agreement that Suarez is worth more than the offer Arsenal put on the table during the summer transfer window, his ability to conjure up something out of nothing for his side is an invaluable attribute to have in a player.
To Liverpool fans he will be worth even more, despite that during his ban there were signs that Liverpool were still a very difficult team to come up against even with the Uruguyan absent - and given the current goalscoring form of fellow striker Daniel Sturridge.
Will any club pay more than what was paid for Gareth Bale for Luis Suarez? For his talent, quite possibly. For the baggage that has gone with him over his time with Liverpool so far, and previously with Ajax? That will probably dent his price tag a bit, but if he manages to keep his head down and behaviour in check then he would certainly command a vastly bigger fee than what was tabled and suggested for him during the summer.
Then again, even with a massive fee, as Aldridge said – it would be hard to replace him.
