Did Demichelis do enough at Stamford Bridge to get a regular starting berth?

The Manchester City centre-half made his debut against Chelsea on Sunday, but can he command a regular place in the Etihad Stadium outfit?

In the absence of Vincent Kompany at the weekend, Manuel Pellegrini gave summer signing Martin Demichelis his Manchester City debut.

The Argentine moved to the Etihad Stadium from Atletico Madrid in the off-season, but suffered an injury straight away.

With the City skipper unavailable for the trip to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Demichelis partnered Matija Nastasic in the heart of the visiting defence.

After his debut, the South American has admitted that he is keen to get a run in the City side.

“I feel like I am a 20-year-old again,” Demichelis said.

“It’s a great experience to take part in the best league in the world.

“I have a lot of ambition, and have not come here to take a secondary role. I want to be part of the team and am confident I will do it.

“The knee feels really good and I feel I am fit and ready to play at Newcastle, but it is the decision of the manager.”

But what role will Demichelis play when everyone is fit and at Pellegrini’s disposal?

The Argentine was thrown in at the deep end with his debut against one of England’s best teams. Demichelis struggled in the early exchanges against Chelsea, and despite his experience looked nervous.

He struggled with the movement of an in-form Fernando Torres, and clearly needs time to settle in at his new club.

City struggled as a defensive unit at Stamford Bridge without their captain and talisman Kompany, who obviously will slot straight into the side once he is fit again.

Who should partner the Belgian in the Etihad Stadium side’s defence remains to be seen. Nastasic has been the most consistent option since moving to Manchester, and seems to work well alongside Kompany.

Joleon Lescott has obviously failed to winner over Pellegrini and as such is unlikely to get much football this term.

Javi Garcia has been played in defence when needed, but the Spaniard has not looked comfortable in the back four. The ex-Benfica man’s lack of pace has been an issue, and he looks more adept in the centre of midfield.

As such, it appears that it will either be Nastasic or Demichelis that will be Kompany’s partner this term. The new man has the advantage of having worked with Pellegrini at Malaga, while Nastasic has proved himself already in the Premier League.

Who should play – Demichelis or Nastasic?
