The Reds are rumoured to be keen on the player, who may yet depart Serie A.
Liverpool could be first in line to secure the services of AC Milan’s highly-rated youngster Stephan El Shaarawy, with the player’s current club continuing to endure a dip in form that could cost them dearly in the Champions League.
The Rossoneri have made a slow start to life in Serie A this term, with last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Parma leaving the club 10th in the Italian top-flight standings and some 11 points off third-placed Juventus and a Champions League spot.
Maximiliano Allegri’s team are also in danger of seeing their European endeavours collapse, with last week’s 1-1 draw with group leaders Barcelona allowing Scottish champions Celtic to make up some ground on the Diavolo.
Failure to secure Champions League football next season could have a significant impact on the San Siro club, who would ultimately be forced to listen to offers for some of their most prized assets in a bid to make up any shortfall in finances created by the loss of top-level European competition.
AC Milan chief executive officer Adriano Galliani has previously spoken of the club’s willingness to listen to offers for El Shaarawy, provided they met their valuation of the forward.
And while the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham are believed to have expressed an interest in landing the player, the Italian may well favour a move to Liverpool, where he is likely to be given more of an opportunity at regular first-team football, compared with the two London clubs.
The 21-year-old may well look to the example of Phillipe Coutinho for encouragement too, with the former Inter Milan playmaker enjoying an extended run in the Anfield club’s first team since his arrival from the San Siro.
And with Liverpool currently second in the Premier League table and keen to compete for a Champions League qualification spot, it could prove a match made in heaven should an ambitious mid-season move be made.
