'Not the Bale we saw on YouTube' - Spanish reaction to ex-Tottenham star's El Clasico

Gareth Bale 3

A look at how the Spanish press reacted to former Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale's El Clasico debut.

Gareth Bale had his first taste of the famed derby between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the weekend, and it won't be one he will remember fondly.

Madrid lost El Clasico 2-1, with Bale substituted after 61 minutes, later seen looking particularly glum on the sidelines.

Over in Spain his display has naturally been the subject of much discussion, and here is the best of what the press over there have had to say:

Marca: "This is not the Bale we saw on YouTube"

"Gareth Bale, the most expensive false number 9 in history, was, after Sergio Ramos, Ancelotti's second bad move at the Camp Nou. With Higuaín at Napoli, neither Benzema nor Morata took his place in the centre of the attack at Barcelona.

"Bale, on the pitch, looked as if he had landed on another planet, as if whenever he saw the ball he could read in it the amount Madrid had paid for him and it made him panic.

"Madrid fans are not getting any consolation from Bale's looking like the baddie in Moonraker, and in fact are beginning to wonder whether Youtube was bewitched when it depicted the Welsh international in his starring roles in the stadiums of the Premiership. But it is only right to request patience, both from a footballing and a marketing point of view."

El Pais: "Everyone agreed that scoring goals is not the only priority of a nine, Benzema dominates like no one else to support the midfield, jump to the ball, moving in depth and continue circulation to further attacks. Bale ignores these concepts and colleagues say it is very difficult to pass a ball if not to the foot."

El Confidencial: "Gareth Bale still no sign of life and his best is yet to come. Madrid were patched in the middle with the mutation of Ramos as pivot and up front with Bale, Ancelotti continues in a maze that will take time to work out."

What does Bale need to do to turn it around, or is the onus on Madrid to find a system which suits him?
