Arsenal should turn their attention to Dortmund’s Jonas Hofmann

The 21-year-old German could be a player Arsene Wenger should pay close attention to when they take on Dortmund in the return fixture, explains Jack Beresford.

Jonas Hofmann’s arrival in the 66th minute of Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 win over Arsenal may not have been the catalyst for the German’s victory but it did provide Arsene Wenger with a glimpse of a player he should be putting at the top of the club’s shopping list.

Arrived at the Westfalenstadion from Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim two years ago, the winger is quickly emerging as the latest exciting youth prospect to emerge at the club under manager Jurgen Klopp.

After amassing a commendable 15 goals in 75 appearances for the Dortmund second team, the 21-year-old was given his big opportunity, making a full debut to remember last April that included an assist in a 4-2 victory over Augsburg.

Since then the appearances have continued apace, with Hofmann playing a part in each of the club’s three Champions League fixtures this term as manager Klopp attempts to go one better than last year’s final appearance at Wembley.

But as with Nuri Sahin and Mario Gotze before, the midfielder is likely to be the subject of interest from big clubs abroad with Arsenal one of a number of teams sure to consider a move for the highly-rated star.

The Gunners are no strangers to raiding the Bundesliga side for players, having previously secured the services of youngster Thomas Eisfeld.

Sahin, meanwhile, revealed earlier this month that the North London club had also tried to lure the midfielder to the Emirates.

Hofmann would be a welcome addition to the Arsenal ranks and as a winger could offer competition to the likes of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain.

The 23-year-old has less than two years left on his current deal with Dortmund and could also be open to a big-money move to the Premier League.

But with any move for the player likely to face competition from the usual sources of Manchester City and Chelsea alongside German giants Bayern, a concrete offer for the player still looks some way off becoming a reality.
