Sunderland 2-1 Newcastle: Black Cats get first league win, against fiercest rivals

Sunderland won 2-1 win against Newcastle United this afternoon.

A late Fabio Borini goal gave Sunderland victory in the Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light earlier today.

The three points for the Black Cats lifted them off the bottom of the Premier League, as they enjoyed their first league win of the season against their fiercest rivals.

Steven Fletcher put Gus Poyet's side ahead after just five minutes, following good work from Adam Johnson.  But the winger was later at fault for the Magpies' equaliser as he allowed Mathieu Debuchy to run through and beat Tim Krul 12 minutes into the second half.

With time running out, it looked like the points would be shared, until substitute Borini struck a 25-yard winner to send the home fans into rapturous celebration.

The result means Sunderland are now one point ahead of Crystal Palace, while Newcastle remain 10th.
