Manchester United’s search for the long-term successor for Paul Scholes continues, with attempts to bring a top drawer playmaker to Old Trafford likely to resume in the January transfer window.
However, the Premier League champions may well have a player capable of adding guile, energy and venomous long shooting to their engine room already on their books.
Nick Powell is highly rated at United, and is continuing his progression this season on a loan spell at Wigan.
The former Crewe midfielder needs game time to develop as a player, and looks set to have a big season for the DW Stadium outfit.
Getting consistent playing time in a Wigan team full of players that have Premier League experience will only be good for Powell’s confidence and ability, while he has the additional bonus of playing in the Europa League too.
Rubin Kazan are seasoned European opponents, but were held to a 1-1 draw last night by the Championship outfit. Powell was the man on the scoresheet for the hosts, and once more showed his individual ability with a driving effort from the edge of the box.
United certainly look likely to sign a player from abroad to add creativity to their midfield, but this could be a definitive season for Powell.
Tom Cleverley spent a season on loan at Wigan and returned capable of playing in the United first-team. If Powell can continue his early season form, there is no reason that the prodigious talent wouldn’t be the same at the start of next term.
