Tottenham Hotspur's Erik Lamela failed to thrill again against Moldovan side FC Sheriff.
How patient are Tottenham fans willing to be?
It looks so far like that question is going to be really tested given Erik Lamela's slow start to life at the club.
The Argentine became their record signing this summer from AS Roma, but is still searching for his first goal for the club since arriving, and his displays generally underwhelming.
Andre Villas-Boas handed him a start against Moldovan side FC Sheriff, but withdrew him after an hour and bringing Nacer Chadli on in his place. Jan Vertonghen and Jermain Defoe scored the goals in the 2-0 win.
Lamela's display in itself was not one which would change perception of him as a player still adapting to life with his new teammates.
He had one shot on goal, which was off target, while he also completed just one successful dribble.
Defensively he contributed, with two clearances, one tackle and one interception, but this is not where fans want to see him having an effect.
He made just 33 passes in his 61 minutes, in comparison to 85 from Christian Eriksen in 90 minutes. However Lamela completed just 76 per cent of them with Eriksen 87 per cent.
Whether his early withdrawal will have helped his confidence is questionable. If he starts against Hull at the weekend then we may learn more about his mental strength and ability to pull himself out of the rut he finds himself in.
Here is what Tottenham fans had to say about his display:
I think if we saved that 25m+ on Lamela and got Benteke we would be a real big threat! Lamela will take ages to settle in. #ToomanyRegrets— Alex Kyriacou (@LittleAlexK) October 24, 2013
I think Lamela needs to start against hull. AVB needs to build his confidence. He is a young talented player with bags of potential COYS— Martinho Hotspur (@wildy412) October 24, 2013
Lamela is only 21, has just moved to the UK and doesn't speak English. Keep calm, this lad is a super talent with amazing potential. #COYS— Christopher (@Come0nUSpurs) October 24, 2013
Lamela just tried to play a one two with Defoe and made a terrific run into space expecting a pass back, You must be new here son.— Hom (@HomShowcaseLDN) October 24, 2013
Lamela needs to just relax & believe in his own ability! Ya can tell he is quality! Good quick feet!! Needs more prem time imo #COYS— Marc the ¥id ♦ (@3marcdinning33) October 24, 2013
Lamela lacks confidence, as clear as day. Always looking 4 the ball but wont try getting a shot off #COYS— GrumpyYid (@GrumpyYid1882) October 24, 2013
Lamela was poor but surely it won't help his confidence to take him off after 60 mins? #THFC— Stuart Peel (@JedLomax) October 24, 2013
Lamela was the biggest waste of money when Townsend is twice as good— Ben (@BenFitzgerald98) October 24, 2013
What did you think of Lamela's performance? Would you start him against Hull?
