More potential than Zaha and Januzaj - Young United talent destined for greatness?

Old Trafford Statues

Nick Powell has more potential than both Zaha and Januzaj argues Stephen Pickering.

The Crewe born midfielder is currently the latest product of the Crewe Alexandra’s ever productive academy that produced former England internationals in Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson and Dean Ashton.

Nick Powell was unquestionably the best player in League Two with Crewe Alexandra scoring 16 goals during their promotion season, including an absolute breath-taking strike in the play-off final.

The raw talent on show was enough for Sir Alex Ferguson to take a gamble on. Unprecedented as it may be for a Champions League side to look to the 4th tier of English football for potential talent; this decision just endorses the eye for a player the great man himself had (or his scouts). The price blew every other transfer from League Two out the water which could be a healthy 6 million pound sum paid to The Railwaymen.

He impressed in his first season at United which was used as a transitional year getting him used to the surroundings and the players at the club, he made 6 appearances for United in total scoring 1 goal against the club he is currently on loan at, Wigan Athletic.

Upon signing on a season long loan at Wigan, the buzz around the youngster was incredible. At Wigan there was a chance to prove himself in the championship and European football, which they obtained through their impressive FA Cup win against Manchester City last season

He has quickly become a key player for Wigan filling the huge void left by midfield talent James McCarthy who joined Everton for 13 million pound late in the summer transfer window. The attack minded midfielder has scored 4 goals in 10 games so far for Wigan, the latest coming with an emphatic right foot effort against Rubin Kazan.

England under 21 came knocking for the former Crewe man having impressed at all the various age groups. The current form in Europe proves he isn’t put-off by playing in different countries and against different styles of football, which will stand him in good stead in the future when he plays more fierce European games and International games.

Manchester United fans should watch this extremely talented player with a keen eye, a real crowd pleaser and someone I would put above Januzaj and Zaha in terms of potential but that remains to be seen. What is for sure, Manchester United have another extremely talented young English player that will go on and impress in front of the large crowds at Old Trafford and eventually Wembley.
