Despite signing Simon Mignolet in the summer, Brendan Rodgers is looking to bring German international Ron-Robert Zieler to Anfield.
Whilst adding another goalkeeper maybe isn't the priority at Liverpool, it seems Brendan Rodgers is tempted by a release clause in Ron-Robert Zieler's contract. The 24 year old stopper can leave Hannover 96 for £7m if the deal is made before May 1st, 2014, according to the Daily Express.
Zieler, a German international, will be familiar to some readers as a reserve team goalkeeper for Manchester United until 2010, having been brought over to England as a 16-year-old from Koln in 2008. With no appearances for the Red Devils and just two games during a loan spell with Northampton Town, Zieler returned to his native Germany in search of first team football.
Whilst his return to Germany started by appearing for Hannover's second team, he quickly impressed enough to earn a first team spot and hasn't looked back since, racking up 112 appearances for Hannover since signing in 2010. He has since gone on to claim two caps for the national team, where opportunities are hard, given that Manuel Neuer, Rene Adler and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen are all battling for recognition under Joachim Loew.
His reputation has grown steadily since leaving United, but a move to Liverpool seems somewhat unlikely. With his hopes of an international career in his mind, would he really move on to Anfield, where he would likely be an understudy to Simon Mignolet? As good as Zieler is - and as good as £7m for him is - Rodgers would be better off spending his money on areas of the team that need improvement, rather than sinking funds into a second choice goalkeeper.
With Bundesliga sides such as Borussia Monchengladbach and Schalke also lining Zieler up to replace their current goalkeepers - Gladbach may lose Ter Stegen to Barcelona over the summer, whilst Schalke are still yet to find a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer - it may be more feasible for him to stay in Germany, where he can continue to catch Loew's attention on a weekly basis.
Hannover seem prepared for the possibility of Zieler seeking a move away from the club, but haven't given up hope of tying up a new contract extension with their goalkeeper, with sporting director Dirk Dufner saying; 'I am sure that other clubs are interested in him. And if an offer comes in, Ron should definitely think about it. That's part of being an intelligent player.
'If he decides to stay with us, so much the better.'
A move away may well be on the cards for the former Manchester United man, but Liverpool doesn't seem like a sensible destination.
