A round up of the latest Liverpool news from the past 24 hours.
Liverpool midfielder Lucas is set to return to the starting line-up this weekend against West Brom. The Brazilian missed last weekend’s trip to Newcastle for the birth of his child. Jose Enrique is expected to be left out of the side for a second consecutive week.
Philippe Coutinho is set to make his comeback from injury in the Premier League clash at Arsenal. The Brazilian has been out of action with a shoulder injury and Brendan Rodgers says this weekend is a little too soon for him.
“It’s brilliant to have Philippe back out with the group but he’s still restricted. He has only joined in with the team on a non-contact basis. This weekend will probably come too soon for him but he’s not far away,” said the Liverpool boss.
Brendan Rodgers has earned praise for his response when pressed by journalists over claims in Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography. Rodgers stuck up for Steven Gerrard, who Ferguson said wasn’t a top player, while batting back other questions, suggesting he wasn’t prepared to publicise the book.
Jan Molby has backed Rodgers, with the former Reds player suggesting that Ferguson’s comments about the club were pointless.
“I’ve found much of what has come out this week pointless and unnecessary. The digs he has had at Liverpool in particular are very strange,” writes Molby in the Liverpool Echo.
Luis Suarez says he believes his partnership with Daniel Sturridge will help to fire Liverpool into the Champions League. The pair have become known as ‘SAS’ for their impressive performances together this season.
“We are trying to progress for the future of the club. We know in the last few seasons, Liverpool have not been in the Champions League and we know we can help the team challenge for the top four,” said Suarez.
Liverpool youngster Andre Wisdom is set to make his debut for Championship side Derby County. Wisdom is on loan with Derby for the rest of the season, unable to force his way into Brendan Rodgers’ first team plans at Anfield.
In transfer news, reports suggest that Liverpool will up their efforts to sign Barcelona’s Martin Montoya ahead of Arsenal. Liverpool are thought to be right in the mix to sign the Spanish under-21 star although Napoli, Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Inter Milan have all been linked with him.
Another player that Liverpool have been linked with is Manchester City’s John Guidetti. The striker last played competitive football on loan at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie where he produced a remarkable record of 20 goals in 23 matches.
Steven Gerrard says former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney give him the most stick on the training ground. Carragher played with Gerrard at Anfield while Rooney regularly links up with Gerrard for England.
