Tottenham latest: Pirlo bid and build up to Hull City

Plus Defoe's reaction on equalling European record

Tottenham have launched a bid to bring Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo to White Hart Lane on a three year contract according to the Daily Star.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also believed to be interested in the Italian, but reports indicate that Andre Villas-Boas and technical Franco Baldini hope that a deal can be in place by January.

Defender Jan Vertonghen is hoping to build on the goal he scored against Sheriff in the Europa League this week when Tottenham take on Hull City at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Vertonghen told the club’s website: ‘Hull have done well this season. They’ve played well and won a few difficult games.

‘It’s important for us to keep our run going, especially at home. We have to win to stay up there. Let’s hope we win our game and other teams drop points this weekend.’

Midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is looking forward to lining up against ex-Spurs teammate Tom Huddlestone, and thinks the midfielder is a ‘fantastic player.’

Sigurdsson told the club’s website: ‘I saw at first-hand last just how good he can be, his passing and vision is unbelievable and if we allow him too much time, he will find his targets and cause us damage.’

Jermain Defoe spoke of his delight after equalling the European scoring record by scoring the second goal in last night’s 2-0 Europa League win over FC Sheriff. It was his 22nd goal in European competition.

Defoe said: ‘I was delighted to see the goal go in because I didn’t really have that many chances. It was a case of being patient, just waiting. It’s great to equal the record and I’d love to break it at White Hart Lane, that would mean a lot.

‘It’s special because Martin is a legend at the club. To be level at the top is great and one more and I’ll break it. I look forward to the next game and if I do it, fantastic.’
