Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra has found himself in hot water back in his French homeland recently, after he made some comments about legendary French players such as Lilian Thuram and Bixente Lizarazu - considering the fact these were two pillars of the magnificent French team that dominated world football at the turn of the Millennium it was always likely that he would cause uproar back home.
It would be like Ashley Cole laying into Bobby Charlton and Gordon Banks, it just isn’t kosher.
But while the response in France has been condemning, and indeed the French Football Federation are set to ask him about his comments in the coming weeks.
It was certainly not a controversy Les Bleus needed in the run up to their play-off match with Ukraine for the FIFA World Cup.
But club-mates stick together, and when questioned on the subject two of Manchester United’s stars leapt to the defence of their left-back and their vice-captain.
David De Gea refused to comment on the interview, stating simply his feelings for Evra:
"This is our captain, someone who has a lot of personality on and off the field. This is a very important player for us. "
De Gea gave short shrift; Chicharito was far more in-depth with his defence of the maligned defender:
"Patrice Evra is a player who has given a lot to this club. This is a great player. This is the captain, he helps us a lot. And we who speak Spanish, we have a special relationship with him because he speaks Spanish very well. And on the ground, it is an extraordinary player who brings a lot to the club and I think he brings a lot to the national team as well."
Agree with Evra’s comments or not, it is still good to see the United players standing together, especially with so many divisive forces currently pulling at the club.
