Nottingham Forest supremo surprise link to Boro vacancy.
The 49 year old Glasweigan manager has been put forward as a shock candidate for Middlesbrough job. Billy Davies currently sits in 4th position with Nottingham Forest and has recently signed a new contract extending his deal until the end of the 2017 season.
According to talkSPORT:
‘’The tricky trees chief, who returned to the City Ground in February for a second spell, has been identified by Boro chairman Steve Gibson as the man to lead the Teeside club back into the Premier League’’
The timing of this speculation couldn’t be more bizarre, just days after signing a long-term contract and currently 12 positions and 9 points above Middlesbrough in the league table. You would think that Billy Davies and Nottingham Forest wouldn’t even give this a second thought, but there is definitely no smoke without fire and in this case, there would be no reasoning to make it up.
Steve Gibson is a highly ambitious chairman and always has been. He took ownership back in 1994 and saw the club through one of its most successful times in history, he as will the Middlesbrough fans will be hungry to get back to that level.
Billy Davies is a good manager, a very good manager in fact. He would no-doubt be a good appointment for the club, yet with the Scotsman controversy is never too far away. He had successful periods at Derby and Preston, yet the majority of fans at both clubs wouldn’t touch him again and only at Forest has he really endeared himself to supporters, in what looks a mutual relationship.
What Middlesbrough fans can expect of Billy Davies
He has been relatively successful at all the clubs he has managed, he may not have achieved a great deal and his only real mark on his CV is a promotion with Derby County. But at each given club at each given time, he has achieved more than what was expected of him.
He is an incredibly shrewd manger that uses his players to their absolute fundamental abilities. He makes them work in a seemingly near perfect system which works just as well with players with ability, than it does without.
He is what I would class as a ‘football engineer’ he gets the best out of the players he has at his disposal. Furthermore, he is a manager I just cannot ever seeing finishing outside the play-offs given a full season! However, he has become known as a bit of a ‘bottler’ in these situations as he has made the play-off final only twice, being promoted once. When he was promoted, he found himself sacked months down the line for setting the foundations in place for one of the most horrific seasons in English football.
I personally cannot see this one happening, but you never know in football. If Steve Gibson can put a good enough package on the table then I would imagine it could entice him. There is no loyalty in football, Billy Davies himself has already proved he is willing to jump ship to better his own career and interest.
What do Middlesbrough fans think about Billy Davies as a possible candidate? And what would it take for Forest to let him go?
