Sneijder: Dutch stars should follow Eriksen to Tottenham

The Netherlands playmaker has stated that Christian Eriksen will blossom at White Hart Lane after his summer move from Ajax.

Christian Eriksen is one of seven signings at White Hart Lane over the summer, and arguably the new face that excites Tottenham fans the most out of their latest additions.

The Denmark international has a terrific reputation in the European game after excelling for Ajax over a number of years and becoming a critical player for his country, despite his age.

Wesley Sneijder has been vocal about the benefits for Eriksen personally in his move to north London, and the Galatasaray midfielder has urged other young talents playing in the Eredivisie to switch to the Premier League if given the opportunity.

"If they want to grow, they should follow Eriksen's example,” Sneijder told Nusport.

“The guy you see in the first few weeks at Spurs, he flourishes again. Unfortunately he couldn't in the Netherlands."

The move to Tottenham could well make Eriksen into even more of a superstar, and the early impressions that the Spurs fans have of the attacking midfielder are positive.

Although a completely different player to Gareth Bale, the Scandinavian has the responsibility of replacing the Wales international and changing Spurs’ style of play as a result.

With Bale as their talisman, Tottenham were a direct attacking side that over-relied on a talented individual and based their play going forward on swift counter attacks.

With Eriksen now assuming the number ten spot for Andre Villas-Boas’ men, the attacking intent can be more deliberate, with more of a team approach. The Dane is the man to pull the strings, and there is more of a footballing ethos to the way that Tottenham look to score their goals these days, rather than relying on one player.

As it stands, Eriksen has a very able deputy in Germany international Lewis Holtby and will have to work hard to command regular first-team football in north London. The former Schalke man has been in excellent form of late, and was preferred to Eriksen in Tottenham’s most recent fixture, a 2-0 away win over Aston Villa.

Sneijder’s comments are correct however, and Eriksen has the perfect environment to fully reach his potential at Tottenham. The White Hart Lane faithful are ready and waiting to see just what the mercurial talent is capable of.
