What should you know about Liverpool which you may not already?
Brendan Rodgers’ side have made more tackles so far this term, 180 in total, than any club outside of the relegation zone.
Only Sunderland and Crystal Palace have made more tackles over the eight games played and Liverpool have one of the most consistent tacklers in Lucas who has made the joint-highest number of tackles so far (5) and has picked up the join-highest number of bookings (4) across all players in the league.
Interestingly, Liverpool have scored more goals in the period just before half time than at any other point across 90 minutes – the Reds have netted 31 per cent of their goals in the period between 30 minutes and 40 minutes which would suggest they raise their attacking game just before they go in at the break.
However, the Reds have also conceded more goals at this point, in the exact same period at the exact same level of frequency – 31 per cent of their goals against were conceded just before half time which would suggest some of that attacking drive just before the break has been costing them at the back.
With the wealth of creative players in Rodgers’ ranks at Anfield, one might be surprised to find their best passers are (statistically) their centre backs. Mamadou Sakho has a 91.2 per cent completion rate and Martin Skrtel has a 90.7 per cent completion rate and, whilst that’s likely due to the lesser frequency of their passing, there are several other teams whose best passers are not defenders.
Mikel Arteta, Leon Britton, Javi Garcia, Mathieu Flamini, Juan Mata, John Obi Mikel, Moussa Dembele and Yaya Toure, for example, all have higher completion rates than Liverpool’s defence or midfield.
Liverpool’s highest completion rate in their midfield is Lucas’ 89.3 per cent and Steven Gerrard’s 86.6 per cent which may well be a cause for concern for Rodgers, even at such an early stage, given that his whole system is built on possession and ball retention.
On that note, Daniel Sturridge has been dispossessed more times than any other player in the league so far (328 times in total, averaging 3.5 times per game) yet he’s scored more goals (7) than any other player in the league and made more assists (2) than any other player at Liverpool.
