Tottenham latest: Sheriff, Arsenal rivalry, 'Y*d' chant & more

The latest news and views from Tottenham Hotspur,

Tottenham Hotspur are in action against Moldolvan side FC Sheriff tonight and Andre Villas-Boas has said the opportunity of booking a place in the knockout stages of the Europa League should act as motivation for his players.

Villas-Boas said: ‘We strive to win every game, that’s our ambition as a team – a team that wants to move forward. By doing that here, we can put ourselves in an excellent position going forward. I think the players will embrace this game with that motivation because they have been excellent so far in this competition.’

The Spurs boss has also warned their North London rivals that their title credentials will be tested with the more difficult fixtures coming up.

AVB said: ‘We will see the big fixtures coming now for Arsenal. They have only played us so far and they have both Chelsea and Manchester City to come, and Liverpool.’

Spurs legend Martin Chivers has said he is happy for Jermain Defoe to take his European goalscoring record, if anybody.

Chivers told the Tottenham website: ‘If I’m going to let any record go that I’ve got here, I don’t mind letting it go to Jermain Defoe, who is a great goalscorer.

‘I’ve always sung his praises. I woudn’t like to leave my record to somebody who I feel has been lucky – I don’t think he’s been that lucky at all. I think he’s earned everything he’s done, and he’s scored a load of goals in Europe, so good luck to him.’

Away from the pitch, the club has asked for the views of 70,000 supporters over the chanting of the word ‘Y*d’ at games.

A spokesman for the club said: ‘The club feels that it is important to assess fans’ sentiments on the use of the word. We know this debate has been, and is currently being held, amongst our fans.’
