Liverpool latest: Coutinho could return for Arsenal clash, club icons leap to Gerrard's defence

A round up of the latest news stories about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.

Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho could be in line for a return to action in the Premier League clash at Arsenal. Coutinho has been missing with a shoulder injury and Brendan Rodgers is unlikely to risk him this weekend against West Brom as he continues his rehabilitation.

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has revealed he’s not 100%. Sakho has made a decent start to life at Anfield but insists there is much more to come as he gets fitter and develops.

“I'm not yet at 100 per cent, I'm progressing with each match that we have. I work every day at training sessions to progress and to achieve the highest level. It's logical that I would improve,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

Sakho has also revealed that the Liverpool dressing room is a superb place to be at the moment, full of confidence and a great mix of players from younger talent to the more experienced stars.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge says he is stunned by Sir Alex Ferguson’s comments about Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The former Manchester United boss says in his autobiography that he never thought Gerrard was a ‘top’ player.

“It was no surprise to see Fergie stick the boot into Liverpool, he’s done that for the last 30 years or so, but he’s barking up the wrong tree when it comes to Steven Gerrard. I guess it’s just a way to ensure he sells more copies of his book,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

Another former Liverpool star has backed Aldridge up with Ian Rush suggesting Gerrard’s Premier League goalscoring record is an ‘incredible achievement’. Rush suggests the fact Gerrard is a midfielder makes 100 goals in the league even more remarkable.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson says he’s hoping to spend next summer in Brazil with England. The midfielder has been one of the most consistent players for the club this season and he’s targeting a World Cup squad place.

“I feel as though I have improved 100% since I have come to Liverpool. I look at my game when I was younger, and you compare my game now I think I have improved massively - hopefully I will get an opportunity with England,” said the 23-year-old.

In transfer news, Portuguese newspaper A Bola has claimed that Rafael Benitez will try and lure Lucas away from Anfield. The former Liverpool boss has been linked with several players from his former club including Martin Skrtel after signing Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina on loan for this season.

Liverpool will face competition from Chelsea if they want to mount a bid to sign Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid. Reports today have suggested that Jose Mourinho’s men are ready to splash out £35 million to try and make the deal for the forward happen.

Liverpool also remain connected with Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, but will only move for the forward if they lose Luis Suarez. With that unlikely to happen, reports suggest Tottenham will go after the Belgian with a £28 million bid for the player this winter.
