Mikel Arteta came in for Mathieu Flamini against Dortmund, how did he get on?
You could argue that it was little coincidence that Mathieu Flamini was out injured for Arsenal, and they lost.
But that would be to dismiss the ability of Borussia Dortmund, and the efforts of Mikel Arteta.
The Spaniard played all 90 minutes in the Champions League clash, and Opta powered stats website whoscored.com rated him as Arsenal's best player.
Arteta was the only Arsenal player to touch the ball more than 100 times, 114 in total. Bacary Sagna was closest on 86 while Mesut Ozil (75) and Aaron Ramsey (65) did not exert their usual influence.
Arteta made 88 passes compared to Ramsey's 48, and completed 90 per cent of them. By contrast fellow midfielder Jack Wilshere completed just 65 per cent of his passes. Arteta played nine long balls, finding a teammate with each of them displayed an unerring accuracy.
Defensively Arteta was supreme, making a noteworthy 11 tackles. It is rare a player ever accomplishes double figures in a game. Ramsey by contrast made three.
He also made two interceptions and three clearances, although his one shot on goal was off target.
An impressive display even if his teammates did not match his high level of performance. Was it appreciated by the Gunners faithful?
Yes, but not entirely... here's a look at what they had to say on Twitter:
Arteta was my MOTM. Made simplicity look unique. Tidy performance & good to see Cazorla finding form. #AFC— . (@Arsenalspy007) October 22, 2013
For anyone who thinks Arteta isn't quality, he was by far our best player tonight. Ramsey had an off night. Looked knackered I thought. #afc— Paul Manson (@PMansonAFC) October 22, 2013
Arteta earned his spot back in the starting XI with his perfotmance tonight. #AFC— Basem Medhat ElAdawy (@Basem_ElAdawy) October 22, 2013
Arteta played very well tonight, I thought he done that defensive work very well. Giroud's work rate was also great, deserved the goal #afc— Fabio (@FabTheGooner) October 22, 2013
What did you make of Arteta's display?
