Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has ripped into Liverpool in his new autobiography. Rafa Benitez, Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Kenny Dalglish are among the past and present icons discussed by the Scot.
Brendan Rodgers insists his side need to make significant improvements before they can be considered Premier League title challengers. Liverpool have made a solid start to the season, trailing Arsenal at the top of the league.
“We’re here to compete; Liverpool is one of the great institutions of the game. We’re never happy when we don’t win, but you have to have a sense of perspective as well - I still think there’s a hell of a lot of improvement for us to make,” he said.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has revealed the main reason behind his success. Sturridge has been a goalscoring machine since he joined the club from Chelsea last January and he puts his form down to his mentality and working with specialists in sports psychology.
In transfer news, AC Milan star Stephan El Shaarawy is being linked with a January switch to Anfield. Reports from England and Italy have suggested that Brendan Rodgers’ team are ready to go up against Manchester City to land the versatile front man.
Italian midfielder Jorginho has confirmed there is Premier League interest in him. The £10 million rated 21-year-old was recently watched by Chelsea and Arsenal scouts, which means Liverpool will have a lot of competition if they want to go after him in the future.
Liverpool centre back Martin Skrtel says he’s aiming to hold onto his starting place, as he faces a fight with several top central defenders trying to get into the team. Skrtel has been one of the club’s most consistent players this season.
“After last season when I couldn’t get into the team, this season has been very different so far – Now I have to try and stay in the starting eleven. It’s up to me to keep proving to the manager that I deserve my place,” he told the club’s website.
Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom is close to officially completing a loan move to Derby County. The right-back will spend the rest of the season on loan at the Championship club after failing to make an impact in the first team at Anfield this season.
Former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin has revealed he nearly joined Arsenal three times. Sahin spent a very brief spell on loan at Liverpool from Real Madrid before moving onto Borussia Dortmund when things at Anfield failed to work out as either party expected.
Former Liverpool favourite John Aldridge says he believes the side haven’t reached the heights they achieved over the second half of last season. Aldridge suggests the side needs to do more to take maximum points from difficult games.
“A point away at Newcastle is not a terrible result but not winning a game like that when you’ve got an extra man puts extra pressure on the tougher trips - I just think so far this season we haven’t hit the heights we reached between January and May,” he wrote in the Daily Post.
