Ex-Liverpool ace back for Real Madrid

Xabi Alonso back in training for Los Blancos after a summer of surgery.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has returned to training for Real Madrid after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Spain international has so far failed to feature for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season following groin and metatarsal surgery over the summer.

The 31-year-old however, was back with his teammates on Monday and took full part in the session, handing Los Blancos a boost ahead of a crucial week.

The capital club face Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday, looking to cement their place on top of Group B. And then play Barcelona on Saturday in the first El Clasico of the campaign.

Alonso is not expected to feature in the European clash, but could well take his place in the starting XI against Tata Martino’s side.

This is widely expected to be the Real Sociedad graduate’s last season in a Real Madrid shirt, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Juve all reportedly registering an interest in the veteran when his contract ends in 2014.
