10 memorable Steven Gerrard league goals

Steven Gerrard Celebrates

The Liverpool skipper became a centurion during Saturday's game against Newcastle.

With Steven Gerrard reaching 100 Premier League goals by slotting away a penalty at St James’ Park at the weekend, here is a look at ten of his most memorable strikes in the league for the Reds.

In no particular order:

1) Sheffield Wednesday 1999/2000.

His first goal in a Liverpool shirt and it was a fine way to get off the mark. Liverpool were leading 2-1 before Gerrard went on a run… he dummied two defenders before stroking the ball past Kevin Pressman in the Wednesday goal.

2) Manchester United 2000/01

This was the season when Gerrard started to get on the goal trail quite regularly with the more spectacular strikes, but the most memorable one from this season put Liverpool in front against United at Anfield. After picking up the ball from a lay-off from Robbie Fowler, Gerrard’s strike from 30 yards towards the top corner left Fabian Barthez with no chance.

3) Everton 2001/02

A goal in a Merseyside derby is always going to be special for Gerrard, but this was a truly wonderful equalising goal. After Kevin Campbell had put Everton in front, the ball fell to Gerrard on the edge of the Everton area before he managed to shift it past Gary Naismith before managing to find the top corner when off balance.

4) Aston Villa 2007/08

Let’s face it, he asked for the free kick, and he got it. Whether you thought it was a foul or not, you can judge for yourself. The free-kick itself, however, was sublime. With the game locked at 1-1, five minutes from time Gerrard managed to place the 25-yard strike into Stuart Taylor’s top left-hand corner.

5) Middlesbrough 2004/05

After trailing 1-0, just after the half-time break, Gerrard came up with this wonderful strike after a cross-field ball from John Arne Riise and the Liverpool captain managed to unleash a special strike from at least 30 yards.

6) Newcastle 2007/08

He didn’t exactly get the warmest of receptions at St James’ Park after he was part of the side that failed to get England to Euro 2008, it didn’t stop him opening the scoring with a bullet like free-kick in front of the Gallowgate, though.

7) Middlesbrough 2008/09

One of those games where he rescued Liverpool out of a sticky situation. Liverpool had just equalised after a poor showing in their opening home match of the season, and in the last minute a knock down by Robbie Keane on the edge of the penalty area allowed Gerrard to stroke home into the top corner to give the Reds all three points.

8) Manchester City 2012/13

With the game locked at 1-1, Gerrard came up with a wonderful volley against the Champions. It sat up nicely for him to crash it into the bottom corner of Joe Hart’s goal.

9) Bolton 2006/07

Having been put in front by a superb goal from Peter Crouch, Gerrard doubled Liverpool’s lead moments later, arriving late to volley home Dirk Kuyt’s cross into the top corner.

10) Southampton 2000/01

He picked up the ball 25 yards out before arrowing a shot towards goal, hitting the underside of the bar to give Paul Jones no chance to open the scoring against the Saints.
