The Frenchman’s current deal expires next year and he told Telefoot in France that he’s considering his future at Old Trafford due to personal reasons.
“Your contract expires in June 2014. Does this bother you?”
“No, not at all. It's personal. It's not Manchester (United) that don't want me to sign a new contract. This whole thing is personal. Manchester United's dream is that I finish my career there, but this is something personal,” said the left-back.
David Moyes will likely be pressed on the subject of Evra’s future in the coming weeks but the Manchester United boss may have alienated the defender with his pursuit of Everton’s Leighton Baines.
If Evra doesn’t sign a new deal with United and they are forced to watch him leave for nothing, it opens up a massive gap in the United back four and there are several players United could go after.
Here are five options.
Leighton Baines (Everton)
Baines is a player that United have already very actively tried to buy.
Baines is thought to be keen on a switch to Old Trafford and he has the right experience, consistency and reliability to be able to go straight into the United back four.
However, Everton will not make any deal easy and United could be forced to pay much more than they initially offered for the England international.
Stefan Radu (Lazio)
Radu is a long serving Lazio left-back and a 26-year-old who is extremely experienced and in the best shape of his career.
He can cover multiple positions, playing at left-back or on either side of the defence which would give Moyes different options.
He’s played over 100 times in Serie A for Lazio and has 14 caps for Romania at international level.
Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid)
The Portuguese left-back very nearly signed for the club at the end of the summer transfer window.
He was thought to be distraught that Real Madrid didn’t let the move go through which means he could still be tempted away from the Bernabeu despite featuring prominently in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans so far this season.
Alberto Moreno (Sevilla)
The second La Liga target that Manchester United could go after is 21-year-old Alberto Moreno of Sevilla.
He’s a regular for his current side and the Spanish Under-21 team and he’s also made his debut at senior level, suggesting Vicente del Bosque holds him in similar regard to Barcelona’s Jordi Alba.
He’s the right age for United to make a big investment and that’s exactly what it would take as he’s on a long deal to 2018.
Luke Shaw (Southampton)
Shaw is a player who has been connected to United in the past and speculation of a bid from the Premier League champions is only going to grow in light of Evra’s recent comments.
Shaw would be a more expensive option than Baines, despite his lesser experience because of the fact he’s on a long contract to 2018, he’s still only 18-years-old and the Saints know how good he is and can become.
