FC Schalke midfielder Marco Hoger was carried off injured over the weekend after 36 minutes, as Schalke snatched a close 3-2 win away at Eintracht Braunschweig.
Schalke now have eight first team players missing (Hoger, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Jermaine Jones, Timo Hildebrand, Chinedu Obasi, Anthony Annan, Jefferson Farfan and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar) for the Champions League clash tomorrow night and Hoger could be the biggest miss of all for several reasons.
He’s arguably the most versatile player in the current Schalke midfield, able to sit in front of the back four and protect the defence or able to push forward to control the middle of the team and support the attack.
He’s made seven appearances in the Bundesliga this season with two goals to go with six starts for the club in all other competitions.
There is a slight boost for Schalke with the news that former Tottenham star Kevin Prince Boateng is due to return to training today following his own knee issues but it leaves Schalke’s squad even more stretched.
Chelsea are staring at another great chance to secure an away win in the Champions League although the injuries will means chances for determined young Schalke stars, who will be intent on coming in and making an impression.
