Sakho puts friendships aside as opponent reveals anger at last season’s Liverpool defeat

A select round-up of morning news relating to Liverpool...

As Liverpool prepare to face Newcastle United this afternoon, Reds defender Mamadou Sakho has told the club’s official website all friendships will be forgotten.

With Alan Pardew’s squad stocked with Frenchman that Sakho knows well, the former PSG man will not mind hurting a few feelings if it means securing another three points for his new team.

We play in the same colour shirt representing our country, of course,” Sakho said, “but here there are no friends.

During 90 minutes when you play against your mates in a different colour shirt, you are there to keep them down. You are friends one day and rivals the next.”

After a shaky start for his new side, Sakho is beginning to show why Brendan Rodgers was so keen to sign him in the summer. And another solid performance this afternoon could be exactly what the Reds need to climb back to the top of the Premier League table.

Another player has also been speaking about today’s game – Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko.

Talking to the Northern Echo, the United man reflected on last season’s 6-0 defeat at the hands of Rodgers’ side.

When you lose 6-0 in a game, it is never easy,” Sissoko said. “Yes, I was embarrassed and angry. I was angry because when you lose 6-0, it is very hard on you. You are also very sad.”

The Magpies will be hoping to end the day far happier than they did last season. But the Reds will have other ideas...
