Prior to this match, the Premier League table looked slightly skewed with Southampton fourth and Manchester United ninth. And yet following the latest disappointing result at Old Trafford, those league positions make perfect sense to anyone who saw an impressive Saints outfit grab a late point at the home of the champions.
Robin van Persie had put the home side ahead in the 26th minute, and while there were no more goals until Dejan Lovren's 89th-minute equaliser, the visitors had more shots both on and off target than their hosts.
That said, David Moyes' side struck the woodwork twice, through van Persie and Wayne Rooney. But it was the Saints' defensive summer signing who made United rue those misses when he found the net after a James Ward-Prowse corner.
The result sees Southampton remain in the final Champions League place, while United climbed one place to eighth, ahead of Hull City on goal-difference.
