Liverpool can return to the top of the Premier League with a win against Newcastle United in today’s early kick-off. Behind current leaders Arsenal on goals scored, the Reds only need a point at St James’ Park to climb above them. But as tight as things currently are, Brendan Rodgers will know three points will be hard-earned but much-needed.
Glen Johnson, Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen all returned to training this week, but Iago Aspas is ruled out until December with a thigh injury.
For Newcastle, Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez are unavailable, while Steven Taylor’s hamstring problem is likely to rule him out for a few more days.

Last season’s 6-0 thumping dished out to the Magpies by the Reds is likely to be on everyone’s mind this afternoon. And in truth, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew should need to do little more than remind his players of that humiliation and watch them avenge it…if only football was that simple.
