‘Best young goalkeeper in the world’ going nowhere says Chelsea boss

Thibaut Coutois

Jose Mourinho has made it clear that Thibaut Courtois is not for sale.

Today saw Petr Cech take part in his 300th Premier League game for Chelsea, as The Blues defeated Cardiff City 4-1 at Stamford Bridge.

And the Czech international keeper went into the game with a ringing endorsement from his club boss rattling around his brain.

Jose Mourinho commented that Cech was ‘the best goalkeeper in the world’ on Friday - certainly a confidence boost for anybody.

Now while we are sure the likes of Manuel Neuer, Iker Casillas and Hugo Lloris would have plenty to say about that statement, there is no doubt that what Mourinho said was definitely true at one point in time.

But age is catching up with Cech, who has not looked as imperious as previous years over the past couple of seasons.

Which is perfect timing really, as they also have Thibaut Courtois among the ranks.

The giant Belgian, who is currently keeping Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet out of the Red Devils starting XI, is currently in his third year out on loan with Atletico Madrid - where he was last year voted the best goalkeeper in La Liga.

But that has not gone unnoticed.

Atletico obviously do not want to lose their stopper, who has become a pivotal figure since replacing David de Gea at the Vicente Calderon, while Barcelona see him as the perfect replacement for the departing Victor Valdes.

But Mourinho has been pretty clear in his assessment of rival clubs chances of prising away this star talent:

“I do not worry about the interest from other teams. At the moment our situation is fantastic. Everything is under control. We control Courtois – not Barcelona, not Atletico, or any other teams interested in our goalkeeper. We have the best goalkeeper in the world – Cech. And we have the best young goalkeeper in the world – Courtois.”

Indeed Courtois has made it clear he has no intention of returning to South West London to be play supporting act to Cech, so bringing him back next season would have to be as the number one - or some serious rotation would have to commence.

Chelsea’s Hazard admits he needs to improve – should he be dropped?

But the good news for Chelsea fans is that Mourinho undoubtedly understands the asset he has in Courtois, and is in no way contemplating making a quick buck off the keeper.

Courtois is here for the long haul and Chelsea are to be stronger for it.
