Toby Alderweireld was linked with many teams across Europe this summer.
Ajax would love to have kept the Belgian international this season, but in recent years the Dutch giants have not stood in the way of star players moving away to pastures new and bright.
Alderweireld, who was the subject of a failed bid from Norwich City this summer, was also linked with Everton and Arsenal - as well as teams from Russia, Germany and Italy.
But Liverpool were widely expected to make a move for the player, and at the one point it even seemed they were the favourites for his signature.
Considered the perfect option as a replacement for the now retired Jamie Carragher, he would have been a cost effective option for Brendan Rodgers.
Note the past tense, as Alderweireld completed a move to Atletico Madrid in the summer on a €7million-odd deal - the Spanish completing the 24-year-old’s signature on a four-year deal.
Liverpool moved on fast, with Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho, of Sporting Lisbon and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, arriving in the summer.
But his time in Madrid has not exactly been a resounding success so far.
The Belgian international might be enjoying watching Los Colchoneros play incredible football at the top of La Liga - but he is definitely watching and not participating.
So far Alderweireld has not played a single minute for his new team, despite arriving on the crest of a wave.
But finally, it appears that is going to end. Atletico’s starting centre back Miranda has picked up a hamstring problem, and is expected to miss the game against Espanyol this evening.
Therefore Alderweireld is expected to take his place in the starting line-up and finally make his debut for Atletico, after sitting on the bench six times this campaign.
Now we must wait and see if he has the impact expected, and that had Premier League teams clamouring this summer.
