David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney is his ‘main man’ and praised the striker’s recent form for club and country with England.

"I think he's at the age in his career where he would be one of the main players and he's certainly a main player for Manchester United and England," said the boss.

"He takes responsibility, scores the goals that are required and he's done that from a young age. The age he is now, he's got that maturity and it shows in how he plays and the condition he is in with the way he is playing for club and country.”

Manchester United taken on Southampton at Old Trafford this Saturday in the Premier League in their return to domestic club football.

In team news, Tom Cleverley’s fitness will need to be assessed to monitor his recovery from a calf injury that saw him withdrawn from international duty with England.

“I am happy at Manchester United and I want to commit myself 100 per cent in every game to do my best,” explained the 18-year-old.

“I want to help Manchester United win the Premier League and become the best player in the world.”
