Former Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart manager Christoph Daum believes Gotze can reach the same level as Messi
If you ask most Football fans 'Who is currently the best player in the world?' the most popular answer you will get by far is 'Lionel Messi'.
Some have even said he is one of the greatest ever, alongside Pele, Diego Maradona, Alfredo di Stefano and Tom Finney etc. Therefore, to be compared to the little Argentinian wizard is quite a compliment.
Christoph Daum believes that Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze can become as good as Messi in time. Daum told Sport 1: 'Mario has extraordinary abilities. He will become another Messi. Bayern wouldn't have spent as much money on him if they didn't think he'd become a great player.'
Mario Gotze came to prominence at Borussia Dortmund where he made his debut in 2009. Since then he established himself as an important player in their side. He was a crucial part in the team that won the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012. He was also a key part of their journey in the Champions League last season, which led them to their final.
He was unavailable for the final supposedly, some might say it was convenient seen as though it was against Bayern Munich, the team that he had already agreed to move to after the end of the season. Munich secured Gotze's services for £31m, which made Mario the most expensive German player at the time. That mantle now belongs to Mesut Ozil of course after his move to Arsenal for £42.4m.
Since his move to Bayern Munich, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has struggled for games due to injuries. He has featured just three times in the league this season but Gotze is crying out for some playing time so he can return to full fitness.
He was able to play for Germany for 45 minutes in their victory against Sweden earlier this week, but it may be harder at his club. Thiago is currently impressing, another Pep Guardiola signing. It is fair to say things haven't gone to plan yet for Gotze since his move.
The comment from Daum further adds to the hype surrounding the German playmaker. He is regarded as one of the hottest talents in Europe, but much of the hype remains in Germany.
A lot of Football fans believe Gotze is overrated and will struggle to cement his place in an already excellent Bayern Munich side. Perhaps this is a transitional year for Mario, Christoph Daum certainly believes this is the case: 'It's all about adapting this year and I can guarantee that next season will be his big break-through.'
