Why Chelsea’s next Champions League game could be easy pickings

Schalke 04

Chelsea’s next Champions League opponent FC Schalke suffered huge injury losses.

The waiting room of Schalke’s physician could be the place for the next team meeting. Right now 11 pros are battling with injuries. Most notably:

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar out with a knee injury.

Kevin-Prince Boateng out with a knee injury.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos out with a knee injury.

Jermaine Jones out with a knee injury.

Not a good sign for Schalke days before their Champions League match against Chelsea.

Defender Papadopoulos is already in rehabilitation training but his return is still questionable. Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Boateng is currently in Munich for a special treatment. As we reported earlier it is believed that he is making stellar recovery from the injury. Schalke’s general manager Horst Heldt has confirmed that Boateng has the Chelsea game in his sights and has a good chance of featuring.

“There have been significant positive effects,” Held said to German tabloid Bild. “Everyone is confident that the treatment is going to be effective.”

However his status remains questionable till the end of the week. And if he comes back 100% healthy it still has to be seen how he handles a full match on the pitch with limited training.

Schalke couldn’t compensate Boteng’s absence. Not with this injury shattered roster. He is their man, recording four goals in seven games and seeing defeat with Schalke only to Bayern Munich since his signing.

World-class striker Huntelaar was preparing for his return to the pitch after his two month injury break. In his first training he suffered another setback and could be sidelined for a long time again.

Every part but the defence is concerning. Schalke even got 35-year-old striker Gerald Asamoah back from retirement to help out.

A good time for Chelsea to secure a win next Tuesday. If Schurrle plays like he did in Germany’s win over Sweden, where he recorded a hat-trick and was all over the field, its should be easy pickings.

What do you think will Chelsea get the win?
