While the senior side have a genuine chance of Premier League glory this season, the Manchester City Under-21 team is joint bottom of their equivalent league with Blackburn Rovers.
City’s Under-21s have won just one match out of six so far this season despite scoring just one less goal than Fulham who currently occupy third place.
Tomorrow night’s match against Aston Villa is doubly significant for Patrick Vieira’s men because it comes against the side just above them in the table.
The area which City need to work on is defence because they have scored a decent volume of goals in the Under-21 Premier League this season and they secured a whopping 6-0 win over Bayern Munich in the last round of Uefa Youth League games.
That shows when the side gets things right, they are very effective in the opponent’s final third.
Aston Villa’s youngsters have managed to score just four goals from their five fixtures so far so if City can just defend well and keep a clean sheet, they should have a chance to secure three points.
Things aren’t going to get any easier for City’s youngsters with matches against Norwich City, Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion next month, all currently above them in the table.
City have played half the number of games as Manchester United in the Under-21 league this season but trail their local rivals by two points. Things need to change very quickly.
